Recovery guide

Getting your files back

You need your recovery images and the archive password. Nothing else.

The archive password is required.

If it is lost, nobody can open the archive, including AC001 Labs. Device unlock and a password saved in the app are conveniences on one phone. They don’t replace it.

Steps

  1. Open Encadre and choose Restore archive

It is on the home screen. A fresh install, a new phone or an empty Library all work.

  2. Choose the images

Pick the folder that holds your recovery images. File names don’t matter. If the images are spread over several folders, or have been renamed, choose a folder and search inside it. “Use Encadre images from the gallery” only finds images saved by this copy of Encadre, so after a reinstall choose the folder instead.

  3. Check what Encadre found

Encadre lists the archives it found and how many images each has. It tells you if some are missing but recovery is still possible, or if there aren’t enough to restore. In that case, add the missing images and look again.

  4. Choose where to restore

Encadre creates a new folder in the location you pick. Nothing already there is replaced.

  5. Tap Restore and enter the archive password

Encadre rebuilds the files. This can take a while for a large archive.

  6. Check the result

The result screen shows what was restored and where it was saved. “Verified” means the restored data matches the archive. Your recovery images are not changed.

Good to know

  • Keep every image you have. An archive carries redundancy, so a few missing or damaged images can be tolerated up to the protection level chosen when it was created. Beyond that level the data can’t be rebuilt.
  • Don’t edit the images. Re-saving, resizing or re-compressing one changes its pixels and can make it unusable. Copy or move the original files.
  • Some services alter pictures. If you store the images in a gallery or cloud service that recompresses photos, check that the files stay unchanged.
  • Folder picker limits. Android won’t let an app use some locations, such as the top level of internal storage. Choose or create a folder inside the location.
